📝 Important Notes

  • ⚠️ CONDITIONAL — easy to bring, hard to fly legally
  • At customs: a personal drone is electronics — no duty for a used unit, and a new one counts against the €430 allowance. Customs may ask you to declare it; do so.
  • Turkish drone rules (SHGM):
  • Drones over 500 g must be registered on the SHGM İHA system; registration is tied to a Turkish ID or a foreigner's passport plus residence details — in practice, tourists cannot easily register, and SHGM requires foreign nationals to apply for permission before any flight
  • Under 500 g (DJI Mini): no registration, but the same no-fly zones and the 120 m ceiling apply
  • No-fly zones: within 9 km of airports, all military areas, Istanbul's historic peninsula (Sultanahmet, Bosphorus shores), Cappadocia's balloon corridors in the morning, and most resort towns by municipal order
  • Flying near police or military installations can lead to detention and device seizure, not just a fine
  • Penalties: fines from about 8,000 TL up to 100,000+ TL; confiscation is routine.
  • Batteries: carry-on only, under 100 Wh.
  • Advice: A sub-250 g drone flown in rural Cappadocia or on the Lycian coast away from people is realistic; anything in a city or near the coastline resorts is not. Check the SHGM map and ask locally before flying.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be taxed for bringing multiple Drones and UAVs?

Personal items already in use are typically duty-free. However, if they are brand new (unopened) or the quantity is excessive, customs may consider it for commercial use and require taxes. Keeping purchase receipts is recommended.

❓ More Questions

Will customs confiscate my drone on arrival in Turkey?

Not normally. Bringing a personal drone is legal; confiscation happens for flying illegally, not for possession. Declare it if an officer asks, keep the receipt, and be aware that a boxed new drone above €430 is dutiable.

Can I fly a drone over Cappadocia's balloons?

No. The balloon corridors around Göreme are closed to drones during the morning flights, and the national park has its own restrictions. Later in the day, a sub-250 g drone away from the launch fields and the town is usually tolerated — ask your hotel, as local police enforce municipal rules.
