📝 Important Notes
- •⚠️ CONDITIONAL — generally banned from outside the EU, free within it
- •From another EU country: meat and meat products for personal use, no limit.
- •From outside the EU (general case, incl. Great Britain, the US, Asia): EU Regulation 2019/2122 prohibits travellers from bringing in meat of any animal and any product containing meat — fresh, frozen, cured, dried, smoked, canned; beef jerky, sausages, ham, pâté, meat-filled dumplings, instant noodles with meat. There is no small-quantity exemption. The rule exists to keep African swine fever and foot-and-mouth disease out.
- •Country exceptions: meat and meat products from the Faroe Islands and Greenland are allowed up to 10 kg; animal-origin foods from Andorra, Iceland, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Northern Ireland are allowed with no quantity limit. Declare and present them to customs.
- •Exceptions: fish and seafood (up to 20 kg), and powdered infant food or special medical foods up to 2 kg.
- •Enforcement: French customs (Douane) runs dog teams at Paris CDG on flights from Africa, Asia and the Americas; undeclared meat is seized and, for quantities that look commercial, fined. Ferry and Eurostar arrivals from the UK are also checked since Brexit.
- •Advice: France's charcuterie is the reason to visit — saucisson, jambon de Bayonne, rillettes. Buy here; check your home country's rules before taking it back.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring Peking duck?
Cooked duck products like Peking duck are typically not allowed entry into most countries.
Does Duck need to be vacuum-sealed for entry?
Vacuum sealing can significantly reduce the risk of confiscation, especially for meat or dried products. Additionally, Duck with complete commercial labeling and ingredient lists is more likely to pass inspection.
What should I consider when bringing Duck?
The most important thing when bringing Duck is to confirm if it exceeds the duty-free allowance or declaration threshold of your destination. It's recommended to keep purchase receipts and ensure Duck is in its original packaging for easier customs inspection. If the Duck is of high value, always use the red declaration channel.
❓ More Questions
Can I bring beef jerky from the US into France?
No. Jerky is a meat product and the EU ban covers it regardless of packaging or the fact that it is dried. It will be confiscated at customs. The same applies to biltong from South Africa and to Asian meat floss.
Is meat from the UK still allowed after Brexit?
No — since 2021 Great Britain is a third country and its meat is prohibited in passenger baggage under the general rule for non-EU countries. Northern Ireland remains inside EU rules, so meat from there is fine.
