⚠️Passengers carrying drones must declare them electronically in the CBD-I Indian Customs Declaration Form (via ICEGATE or the Atithi app) before entering the Green Channel, answer “Yes” to item 18(x) Drones, and report to the Customs Officer at the Red Channel. Details of any DGFT import authorisation must be declared in advance. If the declaration was not made electronically, the Assistant or Deputy Commissioner of Customs may allow it to be made in another manner on arrival. Declaring does not make importing a drone without DGFT authorisation lawful.

- •Drones are heavily regulated in India: imports by DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade), and operations by DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) under the Drone Rules, 2021:
- •Importing complete drones (CBU, SKD or CKD form) is prohibited. Exceptions: government entities, recognised educational institutions, government-recognised R&D entities and drone manufacturers importing for R&D, and imports for defence & security — each only with a DGFT import authorisation
- •Prohibited items are not allowed in passenger baggage without a valid DGFT authorisation/permission; the former DGCA import clearance no longer exists
- •Declare drones to customs: answer “Yes” to Drones in the CBD-I declaration and report to the Red Channel
- •Before operating, a drone must be registered and issued a Unique Identification Number (UIN) unless exempt under the Drone Rules; registration is now done on eGCA, while flight plans and the airspace map remain on Digital Sky
- •Always check the latest airspace map: red zones (no-drone zones) need Central Government permission; yellow zones, including areas near operational airports, need air traffic control permission
- •Many tourist sites prohibit drones
- •Violating the Drone Rules (e.g. flying an unregistered drone): penalty up to ₹1 lakh; breaches of the customs baggage rules are penalised separately under the Customs Act
- •⚠️ It is very difficult for tourists to legally fly drones in India. Unless you hold a DGFT import authorisation, leave your drone at home.

Personal items already in use are typically duty-free. However, if they are brand new (unopened) or the quantity is excessive, customs may consider it for commercial use and require taxes. Keeping purchase receipts is recommended.
