About Dried Abalone
🚨 Warning: Japan Animal Quarantine Service has increased inspections on meat products. Carrying prohibited meat (even vacuum-sealed) can result in fines up to 3 million JPY. If you want to bring Dried Abalone and Seafood as a snack or souvenir, be mindful of agricultural bans at your destination. For biosecurity reasons, many countries prohibit untreated Dried Abalone and Seafood. Choosing commercially packaged products with ingredient lists is highly recommended. 💡 Tip: If unsure about a food item, "Declare it" to avoid fines. 📝 Important Notes
- •🚫 NOT ALLOWED — Japan's Animal Quarantine Service seizes all meat
- •Under the Act on Domestic Animal Infectious Diseases Control, any meat or meat product of cloven-hoofed animals or poultry may only enter Japan with an inspection certificate issued by the exporting country's government — something no traveller carries. In practice that means:
- •Prohibited: beef, pork, lamb, chicken, duck — fresh, frozen, cured, dried, smoked; jerky, sausages, ham, bacon, salami, meat floss, canned meat, meat-filled buns and dumplings, instant noodles with real meat pieces
- •Duty-free purchases in Korea, Taiwan or Southeast Asia are not exempt
- •Penalties (tightened 2020): undeclared meat found by the beagle detector dogs or X-ray — up to ¥3,000,000 fine or 3 years' imprisonment; foreigners have been arrested and deported for repeat offences. In 2024 the AQS confiscated over 100,000 items.
- •Declare it and nothing happens: hand it over at the Animal Quarantine counter before customs.
- •Advice: Bring no meat at all. Japan's own wagyu, yakitori and tonkatsu are the point of the trip.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dried Abalone and Seafood need to be vacuum-sealed for entry?
Vacuum sealing can significantly reduce the risk of confiscation, especially for meat or dried products. Additionally, Dried Abalone and Seafood with complete commercial labeling and ingredient lists is more likely to pass inspection.
What should I consider when bringing Dried Abalone and Seafood?
The most important thing when bringing Dried Abalone and Seafood is to confirm if it exceeds the duty-free allowance or declaration threshold of your destination. It's recommended to keep purchase receipts and ensure Dried Abalone and Seafood is in its original packaging for easier customs inspection. If the Dried Abalone and Seafood is of high value, always use the red declaration channel.
❓ More Questions
Can I bring Korean or Taiwanese meat snacks bought at the airport into Japan?
No. Airport duty-free does not exempt meat from quarantine — Korean beef jerky, Taiwanese pork floss and sausages are among the most confiscated items at Narita and Kansai. Eat them before landing or surrender them at the quarantine counter.
Are canned meat or instant noodles with meat allowed into Japan?
Canned meat from a government-approved facility with a certificate is technically admissible, but travellers cannot prove that, so it is confiscated. Instant noodles with dried meat pieces are treated as meat products; noodles with only meat-flavoured powder are generally passed. When in doubt, declare.
